Introduction

روي عن بعض المشايخ أنه سئل عن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - عنه فقال من جملة الآثار التي ذكر الله - سبحانه وتعالى - قال: {ائْتُونِي بِكِتَابٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ هَذَا أَوْ أَثَارَةٍ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ}

The Science of Astrological Judgments

When the term “judgments” is used in the rational sciences, it means occult conditions inferred from known premises, namely the stars, their movements, their positions, and their times.

In the religious sciences, it denotes the juridical branches derived from the four foundations; this will be discussed under the Science of Jurisprudence.

The former consists in inferring events occurring in the world of generation and corruption, and conditions in minerals, plants, and animals, from the configurations of the heavens and the positions of the stars—opposition, conjunction, trine, sextile, and square.

Its subject is the two classes of stars. Its principles are the differences of movements, aspects, and conjunctions. Its purpose is knowledge of what will occur according to the customary course established by the Real, while allowing, in our view, that it may fail to occur, as with the benefits of simples.

Among what is cited as evidence of its soundness is the foundation of Baghdad: its founder arranged it while the Sun was in Leo, Mercury in Virgo, and the Moon in Sagittarius, and divine decree determined that no ruler would die there; this continued to be the case. This applies generally. In particular, whenever a person's nativity is known, it becomes easy to judge all that will befall him, including illness, treatment, earning, and other matters. Thus in Tadhkirat Daawood. The evidence may be disputed after close examination of the history, but discrediting the evidence does not entail invalidating the claim.

Aboo al-Khayr said: “Know that many scholars hold the science of the stars categorically forbidden, while some hold forbidden the belief that the stars are intrinsically efficacious. It has been reported of al-Shaafi'ee that he said: If the astrologer believes that none is efficacious except God—glorified and exalted is He—but that God has established His custom such that a certain thing occurs when another occurs, and that the efficacious agent is God—glorified and exalted is He—then, in my view, there is no objection. Wherever blame has been reported, it should be understood as applying to one who believes that the stars are efficacious in themselves.” Ibn al-Subkee mentioned this in his al-Tabaqaat al-Kubraa.

In this subject, the author of Miftaah al-Sa'aada went on at length, though he excessively attacked it. He said: “Know that astrological judgments are different from astronomy, because the latter is known through calculation and is therefore a branch of the mathematical sciences. The former is known through nature's indication of effects and is therefore a branch of the natural sciences. It has branches, including the science of elections, geomancy, bibliomancy, cleromancy, augury, and omen-reading.” End.

I say: The truth in this matter is what the reports indicate, not what men have proposed through their corrupt opinions and defective intellects.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “Among its abridgements are Kooshyaar's Mujmal al-Usool and Muhyee al-Deen al-Maghribee's al-Jaami' al-Sagheer. Among its intermediate works are al-Baari' and al-Mughnee. Among its extensive works are Ibn Shar''s Majmoo', Aboo Ma'shar's al-Adwaar, Aboo al-Rayhaan al-Beeroonee's al-Irshaad, al-Khuseebee's al-Mawaaleed, al-Sanjaaree's al-Tahaaweel, al-Baaziyaar's al-Qiraanaat, al-Qasraanee's al-Masaa'il, al-'Alaa'ee's al-Ikhtiyaaraat, Taklooshaa's Daraj al-Falak, and al-Beeroonee's al-Tafheem.” He added that Kashf al-Dhunoon mentions many books on it.

The Science of Twitching

It is a branch of physiognomy. Aboo al-Khayr said: “It is a science that investigates how the twitching of a person's limbs, from head to foot, indicates the conditions that will occur to him, together with its circumstances and benefit.

“Its purpose is evident, but it is not a dependable science because its indications are weak and its inference obscure. I have seen brief treatises on it, but they neither cure the sick nor quench the thirsty.” End. The same is found in Madeenat al-'Uloom.

Shaykh Daawood al-Antaakee said in his Tadhkira: “The twitching of a limb and the body is involuntary. Its efficient cause is the craftsman; its material cause is vaporized food; its formal cause is conjunction; and its final cause is propulsion. Natural power proceeds from it. The condition of the body in relation to it is like the condition of the earth in relation to an earthquake, generally and specifically. It is a prelude to the illness that will occur to the twitching limb, caused—according to the sounder view—by a humor resembling moving vapor.”

Galen said: “The twitching limb is the healthiest of limbs, for if it were not strong, vapor would not accumulate beneath it, just as it gathers beneath the ruptures of mountains in the earth.” He also said: “This is faulty reasoning in natural science, because the cause of accumulation is the constriction and tightening of the pores, not the strength or weakness of the body. Therefore it does not occur in loose earth when its soil is sound, nor do we observe matter flowing into weak limbs. Moreover, twitching is much more frequent in those who bathe and receive massage little than in the opposite case.” Most people counted it a science and attached judgments to it.

It was attributed to certain Persians, Iraqis, and Indians, such as Tumtum and Euclid; statements concerning it were transmitted from Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Saadiq and Alexander, though they are not established. The statements can nevertheless be given a possible interpretation, since the movement of the twitching limb may be related to the movement of the star corresponding to it, in light of what we have explained concerning the correspondence of the celestial and terrestrial realms in their judgments. This is evident. The aforementioned treatises are recorded in their proper place.

The Science of Elections

It is a branch of astrology. It investigates the judgments of every time and period, in terms of the good and evil proceeding in the sublunary world according to changes in the Moon's stations, the positions of the stars, times in which one must avoid initiating affairs, times in which beginning affairs is recommended, and times in which beginning affairs is intermediate.

Every time has a special relation to some matters in respect of good and to others in respect of evil. This depends on the Sun's position in the signs, the Moon's position in the stations, and the configurations between them—opposition, conjunction, trine, square, sextile, and the like—so that, by regulating these conditions, one may choose a time for any intended matter, such as travel, construction, cutting cloth, and other affairs.

Many books concern it, including the books of Ptolemy, Waalis the Egyptian, Drōnius the Alexandrian, Aboo Ma'shar al-Balkhee, 'Umar ibn Farhaan al-Tabaree, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Jaleel al-Sanjaaree, Muhammad ibn Ayyoob al-Tabaree, and Ya'qoob ibn 'Alee al-Qasraanee, arranged in two treatises and twenty chapters; as well as the books of Kooshyaar ibn Labbaan al-Jeelee, Sahl ibn Nasr, Kanka the Indian, Ibn 'Alee al-Khayyaat, al-Fadhl ibn Bishr, Ahmad ibn Yoosuf, al-Fadhl ibn Sahl, Nawfal al-Himsee, Aboo Sahl Maajoor and his two brothers, 'Alee ibn Ahmad al-Hamadaanee, al-Hasan ibn al-Khateeb, Aboo al-Ghanaa'im ibn Hilaal, Hibat Allaah ibn Sham'oon, Aboo Nasr ibn 'Alee al-Qummee, Aboo Nasr al-Qubaysee, and Aboo al-Hasan ibn 'Alee ibn Nasr. al-Kaashifee's Ikhtiyaaraat is in Persian, with an introduction, two treatises, and a conclusion; there are also al-Ikhtiyaaraat al-'Alaa'iyya, called al-Ahkaam al-'Alaa'iyya fee al-A'laam al-Samaawiyya, and the Ikhtiyaaraat of Aboo al-Shukr Yahyaa ibn Muhammad al-Maghribee, among others. The usefulness of this science is evident and hidden from no one.

The Science of Concealment

It is a science through which one learns how a person may hide himself from those present so that he sees them while they do not see him. It has invocations and incantations, but the author of Madeenat al-'Uloom said: “My predominant view is that this is possible only through sainthood and a breach of customary nature, not by undertaking causes that ordinarily produce it.”

The Science of Lines

It investigates inference from the lines found on a person's palm, foot, and forehead, according to their intersection and separation, length and breadth, shortness, and the width or narrowness of the spaces between them, concerning his conditions—such as the length or brevity of his life, his felicity or misery, and his wealth or poverty.

Those who excelled in this art were generally Arabs and Indians. Some of them composed works on it, but it was made an appendix to physiognomy, as stated in Miftaah al-Sa'aada.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “Works on this science may be found, and they are often appended to books on the Science of the Qur'aan.” al-A'shaa—God have mercy on him—said: [Edition footnote 1]

“Look at my palm and its secrets;

can you, when you have promised me, harm me?”

One of the poor Sufis, a pillar among those who ascend into the green realm, said: “The circle is the manifestation of the Creator; He runs through every particle. I found in it an image of the narrow path, making it easy to see one of the individual things outside the numbers, while it is present in all of them and witnessed in all of them. So God, the Creator of things, is present in heaven and dust; He is a Lord exalted above possibility, not of the genus of these worlds. O free Lord, bowing and spreading prayer-rugs, make Him the One of the unique ones, by the noble Prophet of 'Adnaan and his virtuous descendants.”

I say: This is an image of the kind found in poetic subtleties, not in a book of legal questions. Reflect on it. [Translator note: al-Sayyid 'Alee Hasan Khaan, the author's son, may the Bountiful God preserve him.]

The Science of Employing the Properties of Medicines and Simples

Such as the attraction of iron by a magnet and similar matters. There is an account of an iron cross standing in the air inside a chamber whose four walls contained equal quantities of magnets, and of the Christians' wonder at it. This science, insofar as it is an effect of properties, is called the Science of Properties; insofar as it confounds observers because they do not know its causes, it is counted among the branches of magic, as stated in Madeenat al-'Uloom. Aboo al-Khayr also mentioned it among the branches of magic.

He said: “Although this belongs to the properties of medicines, because ordinary people do not know its cause they may perhaps count it among magic. You know, however, that their ignorance is not a valid reason for classifying it among its branches.”

The Science of Locating Minerals and Waters

That is, deposits of gold and silver. It investigates the determination of the locations of minerals and waters, since mineral deposits necessarily have signs by which their veins in mountains and the earth are recognized. Its principles and instruments are close to the Science of Dowsing, which is a branch of physiognomy.

The Science of Bringing Down Spirits and Making Them Appear in Bodily Forms

It is a branch of magic. Know that compelling a jinn or an angel without their embodiment and appearance before you is called the Science of Incantations, provided that your aims are achieved through them.

As for the appearance of jinn before you and their embodiment to your senses, this is called the Science of Evocation; achieving your aims through them is not a condition.

As for evoking an angel: if it is celestial, its embodiment is possible only for prophets. If it is terrestrial, there is disagreement, but the sounder position is that this is categorically impermissible for anyone other than prophets, as stated in Miftaah al-Sa'aada and Madeenat al-'Uloom. Among the works composed on it is Dhaat al-Dawaa'ir and others.

The Science of the Secrets of Letters

In this age it is called the Science of Seemiyaa'; it will be discussed under the letter Seen.

The Science of the Numbers of Magic Squares

Aboo al-Khayr mentioned it among the branches of arithmetic. Kashf al-Dhunoon says that its discussion will come under the Science of Magic Squares, but it does not mention it there. Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “The science of the numbers of magic squares and the arrangement of their flow consists of square tables with square cells, in which numerical figures, or letters in place of figures, are set, on condition that the sides and diagonals of the tables are equal in sum and that no number is repeated in the cells. They claimed that the equilibrium of the numbers produces properties flowing from the spirits of those numbers and letters, and that wondrous effects and strange operations follow from them, provided that suitable times and auspicious hours are chosen.”

This science is a branch of arithmetic insofar as it depends on calculation, and a branch of the Science of Properties insofar as it produces effects. He said: “We shall discuss it in its proper place, if God Most High wills.”

Many books concern this science, the best of them being Shams al-Aafaaq fee 'Ilm al-Huroof wa-al-Awfaaq and Bahr al-Wuqoof fee 'Ilm al-Awfaaq wa-al-Huroof. He said: “There are many books on this science, beyond the limits of enumeration.” End.

There is disagreement over the permissibility of using them; the truth is that their use is prohibited because no transmission from the Lawgiver—peace be upon him—establishes it.

The Science of Shoulder-Blade Divination

It investigates the lines and shapes seen on the shoulder blades of sheep and goats when exposed to sunlight, and their indication of the conditions of the greater world, such as wars occurring between kings and conditions of fertility and drought. They rarely use them to infer the particular conditions of a specific person. The shoulder blade is taken before its flesh is cooked and first thrown upon the ground; one then examines its conditions—clarity, murkiness, redness, and greenness—and infers from them the conditions prevailing in the world, such as high prices, prosperity, and wars among princes, and which side will prevail.

Its four ends are aligned with the directions of the world, and each side is judged according to the conditions related to it, as they appear on the blade.

The Science of the Shoulder Blade is attributed to the Commander of the Believers, 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib, may God be pleased with him.

The authors of Madeenat al-'Uloom and Miftaah al-Sa'aada said: “I saw a treatise on this science, extremely brief, but it explained the 'what' without the 'why'—that is, the questions without their proofs.” It was previously stated that it is a branch of physiognomy.

The Science of Finding One's Way in Deserts and Wildernesses

It is a science by which the conditions of places are recognized without an evident indication through perceptible signs, but through a hidden indication by the power of smell alone, known only to one trained in it. Examples include inference from the smell of earth, alignment with the fixed stars, and the Moon's stations, since every region has a particular smell and every star a bearing by which one is guided. God Most High said: {And He is the One who made the stars for you, so that you may be guided by them in the darkness of land and sea}.

The benefit of this science is plainly immense; otherwise caravans would perish, armies would lose their way, and people would be lost in deserts and wildernesses.

It is said that someone dull in the other sciences may be skilled in this art, just as the reverse may occur. This kind of discernment may also be found in camels and horses. This is the correction to what appears in Miftaah al-Sa'aada.

It is a branch of physiognomy.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “One author related: I was in a caravan in the desert of Khwarazm, and we lost the road. Everyone was unable to find the way. They brought forward an old camel and cast its rope over its withers. It began moving from side to side, from hill to hill, wavering right and left and ascending and descending. It continued in this condition for about two farsakhs, and we feared for ourselves, until it reached the straight highway, the even path, and the right road. We were utterly amazed at it.” End. I have not found a work devoted to this subject.

The Science of Operating through the Greatest Name

Aboo al-Khayr mentioned it among the branches of Qur'aanic exegesis. He said: “Few people, other than prophets and saints, have reached this science. Therefore no work has been composed on it that identifies this Name, for disclosing it to ordinary people is entirely impermissible, since it would corrupt the world and destroy the order of the children of Adam.” End.

Among the individual works on it is Jawaab man Istafham. Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “A detailed treatment of this science is found in al-Durr al-Nadheem fee Khawaass al-Qur'aan al-'Adheem by Imaam al-Yaafi'ee, and in other works by the shaykhs.” End.

I say: They cannot be relied upon, because this matter is reserved for the prophets, peace be upon them.

The Science of Operating through Letters and Names

Aboo al-Khayr said: “This is a noble science. Through perseverance according to prescribed conditions and special spiritual discipline, one reaches the properties corresponding to those letters or names.” Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “This science can be reached only through spiritual discipline and struggle, while observing the rules of the Law, until the gate of the unseen kingdom opens to him. He then operates through the spirits of those letters and reaches through them his worldly and otherworldly aims.” End. Its subject and purpose are evident. It is said that 148 sciences fall under this science. The books of Shaykh Ahmad al-Boonee and al-Bastaamee are famous in this field. End. Aboo al-Khayr made it a branch of Qur'aanic exegesis; its details, together with its books, will come under the Science of Letters.

The Science of Dream Interpretation

It is a science through which the correspondence between psychic imaginings and unseen matters is recognized, so that one may pass from the former to the latter, and thereby infer either psychic conditions in the external world or external conditions in the horizons. Its benefit is glad tidings or warning concerning what is seen.

This is what al-Arneeqee and Aboo al-Khayr mentioned; they included it among the branches of the natural sciences and also discussed the nature and divisions of dreams. Ibn Sadr al-Deen did likewise. I am not concerned here with explaining that, for it is set out in the books of this art.

Kashshaaf Istilaahaat al-Funoon says: “It is a science through which one learns to infer, from composite imaginings, what the soul witnessed during sleep from the unseen world; the imaginative faculty gives it an image that points to it in the visible world. It is reported that a true dream is one forty-sixth part of prophecy. You know this proportion from the duration of the prophetic mission and the duration of revelation before it in dreams. Sometimes a dream corresponds to its meaning without interpretation; sometimes imagination is connected to sensation, as in a wet dream. The basis of interpretation differs according to persons and their conditions. Its benefit is glad tidings of good that will come to a person, warning of evil he may expect, and knowledge of events in the world before they occur.” End.

There are very many books composed on interpretation, including al-Aathaar al-Raabi'a fee Asraar al-Waaqi'a, Urjoozat al-'Abeer, Usool Daaniyaal, and the interpretations of Ibn al-Muqree, Aboo Sahl al-Maseehee, Aristotle, Plato, Euclid, Ptolemy, al-Jaahidh, and Galen. There are also al-Ta'beer al-Muneef wa-al-Ta'weel al-Shareef by Muhammad ibn Qutb al-Deen al-Roomee al-Arneeqee, who died in 885 AH, in which he cited the statements of interpreters and then interpreted them according to the terminology of spiritual wayfarers; Ta'beer Naamaj by Aboo Taahir Ibraaheem ibn Yahyaa al-Hanbalee, the interpreter, who died in 693 AH; a Persian versified work by Yahyaa al-Fattaahee al-Naysaabooree; and Jawaab wa-Khayaal by Shaykh Peer Muhammad al-Lakhnawee, a brief Persian prose work.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “Among the early generations, the one who excelled in dream interpretation was Muhammad ibn Seereen. Among the marvels of his interpretations is that he saw a man sealing the mouths of men and women and the private parts of these women. Ibn Seereen interpreted it as meaning: You are a caller to prayer who called the dawn prayer in Ramadhaan before daybreak; and this was indeed the case.”

It is related that a man asked him, saying that he had seen himself putting oil into olives. Ibn Seereen said: “If you have spoken truthfully, the woman beneath you is your mother.” The man was disturbed and investigated her; she was indeed his mother, because she had been captured after his father and his son had bought her. End.

Ibn Khaldoon—God have mercy on him—said: “This science is among the religious sciences. It arose in the religious community when the sciences became crafts and people began writing books on them.

“As for dreams and their interpretation, they existed among the early generations just as they exist among later people. They may also have existed among kings and earlier peoples, but this has not reached us because the statements of Muslim interpreters were sufficient. Otherwise dreams exist among the human species without exception and must be interpreted. Joseph the truthful—peace be upon him—interpreted dreams, as related in the Noble Qur'aan. This is also established in the sound report from the Prophet—God bless him and grant him peace—and from Aboo Bakr al-Siddeeq—may God be pleased with him. A dream is one of the means by which the unseen is apprehended.

“The Prophet—God bless him and grant him peace—said: 'A true dream is one forty-sixth part of prophecy.' He also said: 'Nothing remains of the glad tidings except the true dream, which a righteous man sees or which is seen for him.' The first form of revelation with which the Prophet began was the dream: he saw no dream except that it came like the breaking of dawn. When the Prophet finished the dawn prayer, he would say to his Companions: 'Did any of you see a dream last night?' He asked them about it so that he might rejoice in what it contained of the appearance and strengthening of the religion.”

The reason a dream apprehends the unseen is that the cardiac spirit—the subtle vapor emanating from the cavity of the fleshy heart—spreads through the arteries with the blood throughout the body. Through it the acts and perceptions of the animal faculties are completed. When it becomes fatigued by extensive operation through the five senses and the activity of the external faculties, and the surface of the body is overtaken by the cold of night, the spirit withdraws from all parts of the body to its cardiac center, thereby recovering itself to resume its activity. All the external senses are consequently suspended, and that is the meaning of sleep.

This cardiac spirit is the vehicle of the rational spirit in the human being. The rational spirit apprehends every thing in the world in itself, because its essence and reality are identical with apprehension. What prevents it from understanding unseen objects is the veil of occupation with the body, its faculties, and its senses. If it were free of this veil and separated from it, it would return to its reality, namely apprehension itself, and would understand every apprehensible thing. When it is separated from some of these occupations, its distractions lessen, and it must apprehend a glimpse of its world to the extent of its separation. In sleep, all the distractions of the external senses—the greatest distraction—have become light, so it is prepared to receive the appropriate objects of apprehension from its world. When it apprehends what it apprehends from its worlds, it returns to its body, since, so long as it is bodily in the body, it can act only through bodily faculties.

The bodily faculties by which knowledge is acquired are cerebral, and the operative one among them is imagination. It extracts imagined forms from sensible forms and sends them to memory, which preserves them until they are needed for reflection and inference. The soul likewise abstracts other psychic and rational forms from them; abstraction thus rises from the sensible to the intelligible. Imagination is an intermediary between the two. When the soul apprehends from its world what it apprehends, it casts it into imagination, and the apprehended object descends from the rational spirit to the sensory level; imagination is also the intermediary here. This is the reality of a dream.

This account makes clear the difference between a true dream and false confused dreams: all are forms in imagination during sleep. If those forms descend from the apprehending rational spirit, they are a dream; if they are taken from the forms stored in memory, which imagination deposited there during wakefulness, they are confused dreams.

As for the meaning of interpretation, know that when the rational spirit apprehends its object and casts it into imagination, imagination represents it in forms somewhat appropriate to that meaning. Thus, when it apprehends the meaning of a mighty sovereign, imagination represents it as the sea; when it apprehends hostility, imagination represents it as a snake. Upon waking, a person knows only that he saw the sea or the snake. The interpreter, using the power of analogy after establishing that the sea is a sensible form and that the apprehended object lies beyond it, is guided by other indications that identify the object. He may say, for example, that it is the sovereign, because the sea is a mighty created thing suitable for comparison with a sovereign; likewise the snake is suitable for comparison with an enemy because of the magnitude of its harm. Vessels may be compared with women because women are receptacles, and so forth. Some dreams are true and need no interpretation, because they are clear and distinct or because the resemblance between the apprehended object and its image is close.

For this reason it is stated in the sound report: “Dreams are three: a dream from God, a dream from the angel, and a dream from Satan.” The dream from God is explicit and does not require interpretation; the dream from the angel is the true dream that requires interpretation; and the dream from Satan is confused imagery.

Know also that when imagination receives an apprehended object from the spirit, it represents it in the customary forms of sensation. If the sense has never apprehended a thing, imagination cannot represent it in that form. A person born blind cannot therefore be shown the sovereign as a sea, the enemy as a snake, or women as vessels, because he has never apprehended any of these. Imagination instead represents such things to him through comparable forms appropriate to the kinds of his apprehensions, which are sounds and smells. The interpreter must be cautious about this, for interpretation may become confused and its rule corrupted.

Dream interpretation is a science governed by universal rules on which the interpreter builds the expression and interpretation of what is related to him. Thus they say in one context that the sea indicates a sovereign; in another, that the sea indicates rage; and in another, that the sea indicates anxiety and a grave matter.

Likewise, they say that a snake indicates an enemy; elsewhere, that it is a keeper of secrets; and elsewhere, that it indicates life, and so forth. The interpreter retains these universal rules and interprets each occurrence according to the contextual indications that identify which of the rules is appropriate to the dream.

These indications may arise in wakefulness, in sleep, or in the interpreter's soul through the particular aptitude created in him; each person is facilitated for what he was created to do.

This science continued to be transmitted among the early generations. Muhammad ibn Seereen was one of its most famous scholars, and rules were written down from him and transmitted by people to this day. al-Kirmaanee later composed a work on it. Later theologians wrote extensively on it. Among the works currently circulated in the Maghrib are the books of Ibn Abee Taalib al-Qayrawaanee, a scholar of Qayrawaan, including al-Mumti', and al-Ishaara by al-Saalimee, a science illuminated by the light of prophecy because of the correspondence between them, as established in the sound report. God knows the unseen. End.

The Science of Attachment of the Heart

This is a science that some ascetics may display to a person of weak intellect, causing him to suppose that they know the Greatest Name or that the jinn obey them. Their emotional reaction may lead them to illness and the like, or to comply with the ascetic in what he seeks, as stated in Madeenat al-'Uloom. It lists it among the sciences branching from magic. As you see, it is a branch of the science of tricksters, and there is no reason to treat it separately.

The Science of Jafr and the Universal Register

Those acquainted with this science say that it is a comprehensive knowledge of the Tablet of divine decree and determination, containing everything that was and will be, universally and particularly.

Jafr is the Tablet of decree, which is the Universal Intellect. The Universal Register is the Tablet of determination, which is the Universal Soul. A group claimed that the Imaam 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib—may God ennoble his face—placed the twenty-eight letters according to the greatest expansion on the hide of a jafr, and that, by particular methods and prescribed conditions, specific words could be extracted from them indicating what is in the Tablet of decree and determination.

This science was inherited by the Prophet's household, those affiliated with them, and the perfected shaykhs and great saints who learned from them. They concealed it completely from others. It is said that no one truly understands this book except the awaited Mahdee, whose appearance will occur at the end of time.

It is reported in the books of earlier prophets. Jesus son of Mary—peace be upon them both—is said to have stated: “We, the company of prophets, bring you revelation; as for interpretation, the Paraclete who will come after me will bring it to you.”

It is related that when the caliph al-Ma'moon appointed 'Alee ibn Moosaa al-Ridhaa as his successor and wrote him the deed of appointment, al-Ridhaa wrote at its end: “Yes, except that Jafr and the Universal Register indicate that this matter will not be completed.” It occurred as he said, for al-Ma'moon sensed a revolt from the side of Ibn al-'Abbaas and poisoned 'Alee ibn Moosaa al-Ridhaa in grapes, as recorded in the histories. Thus in Miftaah al-Sa'aada and Madeenat al-'Uloom.

Ibn Talha said: “Jafr and the Universal Register are two noble books. One was mentioned by Imaam 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib while he was preaching from the pulpit in Koofa; the other the Messenger of God—God bless him and grant him peace—confided to him and ordered him to write down. 'Alee wrote it as separate letters according to the manner of the Book of Adam, on a jafr, meaning a parchment made from camel hide. It became famous among people because it was found to contain what happened to the first and last generations.”

People differ concerning its arrangement and decomposition. Some use the minor decomposition, attributed to Ja'far al-Saadiq, placing in the margin of the major division the sequence alif, baa', taa', thaa', and so on, and in the minor division the sequence abjad, hawwaz, huttee, kalaman, sa'fas, and so on. Some scholars call the major division the Greater Jafr and the minor the Lesser Jafr; the former yields a thousand sources and the latter seven hundred.

Some arrange it by the intermediate decomposition, the method used for letter-based magic squares; this is the preferred and better method, and the lunar and solar margins depend on it.

Some arrange it by the major decomposition, from which all languages and names are produced. Some use letter-combination, which is the doctrine of Plato. Others use numerical combination, which is the doctrine of the rest of the Sunnee scholars. All of these methods lead to the intended result.

Among the works composed on it is al-Jafr al-Jaami' wa-al-Noor al-Laami' by Shaykh Kamaal al-Deen Aboo Saalim Muhammad ibn Talha al-Naseebee al-Shaafi'ee, who died in 652 AH, a small volume beginning: “Praise belongs to God who revealed to His chosen one, and so on.” He stated that the imams descended from Ja'far know the Jafr and selected from their secrets concerning it. End of what is in Kashf al-Dhunoon. I say: These are very weak statements. The truth in this matter is what we mentioned and established in our book Luqtat al-'Ajlaan; consult it.

The Science of Letters and Names

Shaykh Daawood al-Antaakee said: “It investigates the properties of letters singly and in combination. Its subject is the alphabetic letters, and its matter is magic squares and combinations. Its form is their division in quantity and quality, and the composition of divisions and incantations and what results from them. Its agent is the operator, and its purpose is operation in a manner that obtains the desired result through bringing forth or removing. Its rank is after the spiritual sciences, astrology, and astral magic.”

Ibn Khaldoon said in the Muqaddima: “The Science of the Secrets of Letters, called in this age Seemiyaa', transferred its designation from talismans to itself in the terminology of Sufi operators. The general term was thus used for the particular. This science arose in the religious community after the first generation, when extremist Sufis appeared, inclined to unveil the veil of sensation, and wonders and operations in the elemental world appeared through them. They claimed that the perfection of the divine names is manifested by the spirits of the spheres and stars, and that the natures and secrets of letters run through the names and therefore through the worlds. It is among the branches of Seemiyaa'; its subject cannot be definitively established and its questions cannot be enumerated. al-Boonee, Ibn al-'Arabee, and others composed many works on it.”

Its substance and fruit, according to them, are the operation of divinely fashioned souls in the natural world through the Beautiful Names and divine words arising from letters encompassing the secrets running through the worlds.

They then differed concerning the secret of the operation in letters. Some attributed it to their temperament and divided letters, according to the division of natures, into four classes corresponding to the elements; each nature was assigned a class of letters through which operation occurred in its nature, actively and receptively. The letters were diversified by an artificial rule called decomposition.

Others attributed the secret to numerical relation, since the letters of abjad indicate their conventional numbers by placement and nature, and names have magic squares just as numbers do. Each class of letters is associated with the magic square suitable to it in the number of its form or letters; operation therefore combines the letter-secret and numerical secret because of the correspondence between them.

The secret of this correspondence—between letters and the temperaments of natures, or between letters and numbers—is difficult to understand. It is not among the sciences or syllogisms; their reliance on it is taste and unveiling.

Al-Boonee said: “Do not think that the secret of letters can be reached by rational inference. It is reached through witnessing and divine enabling.”

As for operation in the natural world through these letters and the names composed from them, and the effect of the worlds through it, it cannot be denied, because it has been transmitted repeatedly from many of them. One might suppose that their operation and the operation of those who use talismanic names are identical, but this is not so. He then explained the difference at length. We have mentioned some of the detail in our book Rooh al-Huroof. Books composed in this science are extremely numerous. End of what is in Kashf al-Dhunoon.

Ibn Khaldoon discussed this science at length, over thirteen folios, and devoted chapters to it. We shall not cite them here, because of its slight usefulness in this age and the lack of need for it in this time.

The Science of Luminous and Dark Letters

Madeenat al-'Uloom says that letters are of two kinds: one kind is luminous letters, used in works of good, and is “a wise text possessing a decisive secret”; the other kind is dark letters, used for evil, namely all letters other than the luminous letters. They unanimously held that there is no

dark letter in Soorat al-Faatiha or among the disjointed letters at the beginnings of the Qur'aanic sooras. A detailed treatment of this science is found in Ghaayat al-Maghnam fee Asraar al-'Ilm al-A'dham. End.

The Science of Saasaanian Stratagems

Aboo al-Khayr mentioned it among the branches of magic. He said: “It is a science by which one learns the means of deceiving people in order to obtain benefits and acquire wealth. Its practitioner dresses in each town according to the dress appropriate to that town, because its inhabitants hold the wearers of such dress in esteem: sometimes he chooses the dress of jurists, sometimes that of preachers, sometimes that of sharifs, and sometimes that of Sufis, and so forth.” Then:

“They deceive the common people through matters that intellects are unable to comprehend or detect. One of these is the story related by a man who said that he saw, in the congregational mosque of Basra, a monkey mounted on a litter like those used by the sons of kings, dressed in fine garments resembling their clothes. It was weeping and lamenting, while servants followed around it, also weeping and saying: 'O people of well-being, take heed from our master here! He was the son of a king, fell in love with a sorceress, and through her magic was transformed into the form of a monkey. She demanded a great sum of money to release him from this condition.' The monkey wept with moans and yearning, and the common people pitied it and wept. They collected a great sum of money for it. Then they spread a prayer rug for it in the mosque, and it prayed two rak'as on it, then prayed the Friday prayer with the people. After the Friday prayer ended, they departed with that money. Such stratagems are exceedingly numerous.” I say: This story is also mentioned in Meerkhwaand's history, and al-Mukhtaar fee Kashf al-Astaar went to great lengths in exposing these secrets. God knows best.

The Science of Concealment

It is a science through which one learns how a person may hide himself from those present so that he sees them while they do not see him. Aboo al-Khayr mentioned it among the branches of magic and said: “It has invocations and incantations, but my predominant view is that this is possible only through sainthood, by way of a breach of customary nature, not by directly undertaking causes that ordinarily produce it. We often hear of this, but we have never seen anyone perform it. Nevertheless, breaches of customary nature cannot be denied, especially from the saints of this community.” End.

I say: It is considered a science because it branches from magic, not because of sainthood; therefore there is no reason for his predominant view that it is impossible. By way of magic it is possible without doubt, and likewise through the invocations and incantations claimed by its practitioners. Failure to see it does not indicate that it does not occur. It is also called the Science of Concealment, and for this reason it was previously mentioned under the letter Alif.

The Science of the Properties of Letters

Know that letters, especially the disjointed letters at the beginnings of the sooras, possess noble properties and wondrous states known to their practitioners. Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahmaan al-Bastaamee explained them in the fullest manner in his books devoted to this subject. Thus in Madeenat al-'Uloom of al-Arneefee, may God have mercy on him.

The Science of Properties

It is a science that investigates the properties resulting from reciting the Names of God—glorified is He—and His revealed Books, as well as from reciting supplications. Each of these Names and supplications produces properties appropriate to it. Thus in Miftaah al-Sa'aada of Taashkubreezaada.

He said: “Know that, through occupying itself with the Names of God Most High and the supplications transmitted in the revealed Books, the soul turns toward the Sacred Presence and withdraws from matters that distract it from Him. Through this turning and withdrawal, effects and lights appropriate to its aptitude, acquired through this occupation, flow upon it. It is of this kind to seek assistance through the properties of supplications, such that the healer believes that this occurs through the action of magic.” End.

I say: The properties of things are established, but their causes are hidden. We know that a magnet attracts iron, yet we do not know its manner or cause; the same applies to all properties, though the causes of some are intelligible and the meanings of others are not intelligible.

These properties are then divided into many categories, including the properties of the aforementioned Names, which fall under the rules of the Science of Letters; the properties of the letters from which those Names are composed; the properties of supplications used in incantations; and the properties of the Qur'aan.

Aboo al-Khayr said: “The utmost that is cited concerning this consists of the experiences of the righteous. Some reports concerning it have been transmitted, which al-Suyootee included in al-Itqaan. He said:

'Some of them are reports traced to the Companions and Followers. Where no report has been transmitted, people have mentioned much concerning it. God—glorified and exalted is He—knows best whether it is sound.'”

It is said that recitation of the protective sooras and other Names of God is spiritual medicine. When it is uttered by the righteous among creation, healing occurs by God's permission. When this kind became rare, people resorted to physical medicine. This is indicated by his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: “If a man possessing certainty were to recite it over a mountain, it would move.” [Edition footnote 1] al-Qurtubee permitted healing through the Names of God and His speech—glorified is He—and said: “If it is transmitted, it is recommended.”

Al-Rabee' said: “I asked al-Shaafi'ee about healing recitations, and he said: There is no objection to reciting from the Book of God Most High and from what is known of the remembrance of God.”

Al-Hasan al-Basree, Mujaahid, and al-Awzaa'ee said: “There is no objection to writing the Qur'aan in a vessel, washing it, and giving it to the sick person to drink.” al-Nakha'ee disapproved of this.

Other categories include the properties of numbers, magic squares, and decomposition.

They also include the properties of amicable and inimical numbers.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “Kanka the Indian king, one of the Indian sages, derived the amicable numbers and stated that if they are placed in food, drink, or anything else used by two people, they produce a wondrous affection between them.

“If you inscribe them on your garment, they will not leave you. The smaller of them is called male and the larger female. Inscribe them with the dust-pen script, give the smaller to whomever you wish, and eat the larger yourself; the smaller will obey the larger through a subtle property. They are used with raisins, pomegranate seeds, and similar things, as are the numbers of the Names.”

Plato the divine then explained the properties of amicable and inimical numbers. He stated that if the amicable numbers were written on a vessel untouched by water and two people drank from it, a firm affection would arise between them unlike anything previously known; and if the same were done with inimical numbers, a firmly rooted enmity would appear between them, by God's permission. End.

This is explained fully in Tadhkirat al-Ahbaab fee Bayaan al-Tahaabb, with numerical proofs and the properties of the zodiacal signs and stars, minerals, plants, animals, regions, lands, the land and sea, and other things.

A group composed works on these properties, including Ahmad al-Boonee, al-Ghazaalee, al-Tameemee, and al-Jalankee in Kanz al-Ikhtisaas, a useful book for these purposes. Others include Khawaass al-Asraar fee Bawaahir al-Anwaar and Khawaass al-Asmaa' al-Husnaa by Shaykh Aboo al-'Abbaas Ahmad al-Boonee, which is an abridgement. Shaykh Jamaal al-Deen also composed one. Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “The Science of Properties is a science

[Translator footnote 1: This report is not suitable for reliance until its chain of transmission is known to be sound. Let the learned examine it. Mawlaawee Sibt Ahmad Sahwaanee, may God preserve him.]

through which wondrous effects and strange matters, bewildering to observers, arise from arranging the things possessing properties, including minerals, ships, and other objects.

Among these is the report that one of the ancients built a house and made the four walls, ceiling, and floor from equal quantities of magnetic stones. He placed a cross in its center, and the iron necessarily remained suspended in the air at the middle of the house, causing a group of Christians to be entranced by it.

Another is that among plants there is one which, when a person rubs it over his body, prevents fire from burning him. Many similar matters are mentioned in books on properties.

Know that properties may be associated with the Names of God Most High, the revealed verses, and the verses of the Torah and Gospel. Those properties, however, are not branches of magic; rather, they are branches of the Science of the Qur'aan. End. [Translator footnote 2]

[Translator footnote 2: I say: Such properties may not be acted upon until sound hadiths attest to them. Nothing sound from the Sunna establishes them, so they have no evidentiary value, whether they benefit or harm. Mawlaawee Muhammad Ayyoob, muftee of Bhopal, may God Most High preserve him.]

The Science of Invoking the Stars

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “Just as the summoning of jinn and some angels is possible, so too it is possible to subjugate the spiritual forces of the stars, especially the seven wandering stars, thereby reaching important aims such as killing enemies, bringing money or an absent person, and similar matters. One may summon them whenever one wishes after the invocation, without exertion or hardship.”

It is related that a king occupied himself with invoking Saturn. His companions censured him for it. One day an enemy appeared before him, a great king whom he was unable to repel by warfare. That king occupied himself with invoking Saturn. When something descended from heaven, the people of the assembly became frightened and dispersed. The king summoned them, and when they came before him they saw a triangular copper vessel containing the severed head of the king who had opposed him. They rejoiced at this.

The army fled, and the king was victorious through the spiritual force of Saturn. He said: “You thought me foolish for occupying myself with the invocation, but this is its least benefit.” They all became convinced of the invocation.

The vessel was copper and triangular because Saturn's nature requires that metal and shape.

Know that invoking the stars was among the occupations of the Saabi'ans. Abraham, peace be upon him, was sent to them to invalidate their doctrine and refute them. When the river of God comes, the river of reason is nullified. End.

I say: After the revealed Law of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, this invocation has no place in religion. It is pure associationism and sheer unbelief. May God protect us and our Muslim brothers from sciences of this kind.

The Science of Incantations

This is how it appears in Kashf al-Dhunoon. Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “It is a science that investigates performing particular acts, such as tying a thread, hair, or other object, or uttering particular words—some in Pahlavi, some in Coptic, and some in Indian languages—from which particular effects follow, such as curing illness, removing the effect of the evil eye, loosening what has been tied, and similar matters.

“It is called a ruqya because it consists of words raised from the healer's breast. The Persians call it abson because they often recite it over water and give it to the sick person to drink or pour it over him. The Law permits healing recitations when they consist of known Names of God Most High, revealed verses, and transmitted supplications. What the Law has permitted among such recitations is not a branch of magic; rather, it is a branch of the Science of the Qur'aan.” End.

One discussion of this is found in al-Qawl al-Jameel fee Bayaan Sawaa' al-Sabeel by the hadith scholar Walee Allaah Ahmad al-Dihlawee, may God have mercy on him. The ruling on the matter is stated explicitly in Nayl al-Awtaar and Sharh Muntaqaa al-Akhbaar by our shaykh, the judge Muhammad ibn 'Alee al-Shawkaanee. [Edition footnote 1]

The Science of Geomancy

It is a science through which one infers the state of a matter at the moment of inquiry from geomantic figures, of which there are twelve, corresponding to the zodiacal signs. Most questions in this art are conjectural matters based on experience. It is therefore not fully adequate and does not yield certainty in such hidden matters. They say that each zodiacal sign requires a particular letter and geomantic figure; when one asks about the desired matter, the configurations of the signs produce a particular figure, and the indicated signs are exchanged for particular judgments suited to their configurations. These matters, however, are approximate rather than certain. For this reason he, peace be upon him, said: “There was a prophet who drew lines; whoever's line accords with his, that is it.” It is said that he was Idrees, peace be upon him, and that this was his miracle. The point is to refer the matter to an impossibility; otherwise the distinction between miracle and craft would disappear.

A report from some shaykhs states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about it, and he said that it was among the traces God—glorified and exalted is He—mentioned: {Bring me a scripture from before this one, or a remnant of knowledge, if you are truthful}.

In Misbaah al-Raml it is stated that geomancy was a miracle of six prophets, peace be upon them: the first was Adam, the second Idrees, the third Luqmaan, the fourth Jeremiah, the fifth Isaiah, and the sixth Daniel. Their lines accord with the lines of these prophets, as they should; it would be permissible. Many books have been composed on this subject and are known to its practitioners.

Among them are Abwaab al-Raml, Asl Mafaateeh Usool al-Raml, Anwaar Uqleedis, Ta'leef Mawlaanaa Bisha, Tuhfa-yi Shaahee, Taqweem al-Raml, Talkhees Tawdheeh Tahdheeb, Jaami' al-Asraar, Jahaan-i Raml, Khulaasat al-Bahrayn, Dhakheera, Risaalat Yoonus, Risaalat Sar-Khwaab, Risaalat Kulla Kabood, Rooshee, Riyaadh al-Taalibeen, Awzaan, Nuzhat al-'Uqool, Waafee, Naseer Toosee, Hidaayat al-Nuqta, Tajaarib al-'Arab, and al-Zamaanee, the soundest method in this art. [Edition footnote 1]

[Edition footnote 1: I have answered this question in my book Daleel al-Taalib 'alaa Asahh al-Mataalib with what suffices and heals. May his exalted shadow endure.]

The Science of Dowsing

It is the recognition of how to infer the presence of water underground through certain indications pointing to it.

Its depth and proximity are recognized by smelling the soil, the scent of plants growing there, or the movement of a particular animal found there. Its practitioner must possess complete sensory acuity and a powerful, comprehensive imagination. The benefit of this science is evident. It is a branch of physiognomy insofar as it recognizes the presence of water, and of engineering insofar as it involves digging and bringing it to the earth's surface.

The Science of the Zaa'irja

It is one of the technical rules for extracting unseen matters attributed to the renowned Aboo al-'Abbaas Ahmad al-Sabtee, one of the great Sufis of the Maghrib. He lived at the end of the sixth century in Marrakesh, during the reign of Ya'qoob ibn Mansoor, one of the Almohad kings. It has many properties, and people are passionately devoted to deriving unseen knowledge from it. Its working form is a great circle containing balanced inner circles for the spheres, elements, generated things, spiritual forces, and other classes of existent beings and sciences.

Each circle is divided according to the division of its sphere into zodiacal signs, elements, and other categories. Lines from each division pass to the center, and they call them chords. Sequential letters are placed on each chord. Some are numbers written in the notation of the reins, one of the most difficult numerical scripts among the scribes and accountants of the Maghrib.

Others are written in the dust-pen script, all coordinated with those letters. Within the zaa'irja and between its circles are the names of sciences and the locations of cosmic entities. On the backs of the circles is a complete table of intersecting houses, lengthwise and crosswise, containing fifty-five houses across and one hundred and thirty-one along. Some sides have houses filled sometimes with numbers and sometimes with letters, while other sides have empty houses. No one knows the relation between the numbers in their arrangements and the relation between the filled and empty houses. On the two sides of the zaa'irja are verses in the meter of the long complete metre, rhyming in laam with fatha, describing the procedure for extracting the desired answer from the zaa'irja. They are, however, like a riddle in their lack of clarity, obscure and difficult to understand.

When they wish to extract an answer to a question, they bring an astrolabe to take the altitude and determine the ascendant. When they know a degree of the zodiacal sign, they calculate it, take the root of that sign in the zaa'irja, and call it the “sovereign of the ascendant.”

They then perform some of the procedures current among them and known to their practitioners until disjointed letters emerge. When joined, these produce a verse composed in the metre and rhyme of the poem inscribed with the table.

Some claim that more than one verse may emerge from it, in other metres. According to them, anyone who masters the procedure under this rule must receive an intelligible poetic answer to his question. It may be obscure because of deficient mastery of the procedure, and it is one of the strange methods of extracting answers.

Kashf al-Dhunoon says: “On one side of the zaa'irja is a verse attributed to one of the leading masters of ingenuity in the Maghrib, Maalik ibn Waheeb, who was among the scholars of Seville under the Lamtoona dynasty. The verse is:

'You have mastered a question of mighty import; compose it, then, if

the strange riddle's form has been correctly grasped.'”

It contains the extraction of the answer to the questions posed according to its rule.

This occurs only because the answer corresponds to the question; the unseen can never be perceived through a technical procedure.

The correspondence between answer and question concerns only intelligibility. Its occurrence through this craft, by decomposing the letters combined in the question and the chords, is not impossible. Some intelligent people have perceived the correspondence and thereby acquired knowledge of the unknown through the correspondence among things. This is the secret of making the unknown present through the known already present to the soul, especially through spiritual discipline, which increases the intellect. For this reason they generally attribute the zaa'irja to practitioners of spiritual discipline.

A zaa'irja is also attributed to Sahl ibn 'Abd Allaah, and it is another strange procedure.

Ibn Khaldoon's history says: “Its procedure is strange and its craft wondrous. Many masters use it to obtain knowledge of the unseen, and its solution is difficult for the ignorant.” End.

Madeenat al-'Uloom states: “The basis of this science is their claim that the entire world, with all that it contains—universal and particular, above and below, spheres and elements, substances and meanings, words and letters, names and actions—is mutually proportioned according to measured quantities, with each part connected to the other without separation.

“Among this are the question and answer in their words, letters, and meanings.”

Shaykh Aboo Zayd 'Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Khaldoon said in his book entitled al-'Ibar wa-Deewaan al-Mubtada' wa-al-Khabar:

“People divided concerning this science into two groups. Some are enamored of it because, by applying its rule, they believe that the unseen can be extracted through the rule and its operation.

“Others reject it and claim that operating according to its rule is inherently invalid and is merely trickery, supposing that the practitioner composes the verse and presents it as an answer to the question, whereupon the crow flies off with it in every direction.” Then he said:

“The truth is that, as stated above, this science is based on observing the correspondence among the matters mentioned. God—glorified and exalted is He—may lift the veil from the intellects of some of His servants, enabling them to perceive the manner of correspondence among them and to apprehend some matters occurring in the visible world. Nevertheless, human beings cannot gain knowledge of the unseen that God has reserved for Himself, for the correspondence between divine knowledge from the world of the unseen and the visible world is remote. How, then, could it fall under a rule founded on correspondence among entities in the visible world?

“Rules and technical procedures cannot lead to knowledge of the unseen in any way. God knows, while you do not know.” End.

The Science of Magic

It is a science through which a psychic faculty is acquired, enabling a person to perform strange acts by hidden means. This is what is stated in Kashshaaf Istilaahaat al-Funoon.

Kashf al-Dhunoon says: “It is that whose cause is hidden and whose derivation is difficult for most intellects.”

Its reality is everything that enchants intellects and makes souls submit through deception, amazement, and admiration, so that they incline to listen to the words and acts issuing from the magician.

Accordingly, it is a science that investigates knowledge of celestial conditions and the configurations of the stars, and the relation of each of them to earthly matters among the three kinds of generation, in a particular manner. Through that relation and mixture, their causes and reasons become manifest, and the magician combines some generated things at suitable times according to celestial configurations and stellar aspects. Thus what has a great effect but a hidden cause appears through wondrous arrangements and strange acts at which intellects are bewildered and the thoughts of the eminent are unable to unravel their hidden nature.

As for the benefit of this science, it is to guard against practicing it, because it is prohibited by the Law, except when it is needed to repel a magician who claims prophethood. In that case, it is necessary that there be someone capable of repelling him through its practice. For this reason some scholars said:

“Learning magic is a communal obligation, while most scholars permit learning it but not practicing it, except when it is specifically required to repel a false claimant to prophethood.”

The sages differed concerning the methods of magic.

The Indian method is purification of the soul; the Nabataean method is performing incantations at suitable times.

The Greek method is subjugating the spiritual forces of the spheres and stars.

The method of the Hebrews, Copts, and Arabs is to recite certain names whose meanings are unknown. It is thus like a type of incantation; they claimed that they had subjugated the angels who overpower the jinn.

Among the books composed in this art are al-Eedhaah by al-Andalusee; al-Basaateen for employing humans and the spirits of jinn and devils; Bughyat al-Naashid and Matlab al-Qaasid according to the Hebrew method; al-Jamhara as well; Aristotle's letters to Alexander; Ghaayat al-Hakeem by al-Majreetee; the Book of Teemaa'oos; the Book of the Planetary Stations according to the Greek method; Ibn Wahshiyya's Book of Nabataean Magic; the Book of the Blind according to the Hebrew method; and Mir'aat al-Ma'aanee fee Idraak al-'Aalam al-Insaanee according to the Indian method. This is the end of what is in Kashf al-Dhunoon.

In Ibn Khaldoon's history, the Science of Magic and Talismans is “a science of the manner in which human souls acquire dispositions by which they can produce effects in the elemental world, either without an aid or with an aid from celestial things. The first is magic, and the second is talismans.”

Since these sciences were abandoned by the revealed laws because of the harm they contain and because they require directing oneself to something other than God, such as a star or other object, their books became almost nonexistent among people, except for what is found in the books of the ancient nations before the prophethood of Moses, peace be upon him, such as the Nabataeans and Chaldeans. None of the prophets before him had instituted revealed laws or brought legal rulings; their books contained only exhortations to affirm God's oneness and reminders of Paradise and Hell. These sciences existed among the Syrians and Chaldeans of Babylon, the Copts of Egypt, and others. They composed works and left records concerning them, but only a little of their books has been translated for us, such as:

The Nabataean Agriculture, from the arrangements of the people of Babylon. People took this science from it and developed it. Later arrangements were produced, such as the Books of the Seven Stars and the Indian Tumtum's book on the forms of degrees and stars, among others.

Then Jaabir ibn Hayyaan, the greatest magician of this community, appeared in the East. He examined the books of those people, extracted the craft, delved into its essence, brought it forth, and composed other works on it. He wrote extensively on it and on the craft of alchemy, because alchemy is one of its appendages: the transformation of specific bodies from one form to another occurs through psychic power, not practical craft, and is therefore a kind of magic. Then Maslama ibn Ahmad al-Majreetee, the leading scholar of instruction and magic in al-Andalus, came and abridged all those books, refined them, and gathered their methods in his book Ghaayat al-Hakeem. No one composed anything on this science after him. Let us preface the discussion with an introduction clarifying the reality of magic.

Although human souls are one in kind, they differ in their properties. They are classes, each class possessing a particular property of its kind that is not found in another class. These properties became the natural constitution and innate disposition of their class.

The souls of the prophets, peace be upon them, possess a property by which they become prepared for divine knowledge and for addressing the angels, peace be upon them, concerning God—glorified and exalted is He—as previously discussed. This includes what follows from it of effects in the universe, drawing upon the spiritual forces of the stars to act within it, and producing effects through psychic or satanic power.

The effects of the prophets are divine support and a lordly property. The souls of soothsayers possess a property that enables them to perceive unseen matters through satanic powers. Every class, likewise, possesses a property not found in another.

The souls of magicians have three ranks, which will be explained.

The first is the one that produces effects through will alone, without an instrument or aid. This is what the philosophers call magic.

The second uses an aid from the mixture of the spheres, the elements, or the properties of numbers. They call this talismans, and it is a weaker rank than the first.

The third produces effects in the imaginative faculties. The practitioner of this effect deliberately acts upon the imaginative faculties, manipulating them in a particular way and casting into them various imaginings, imitations, and images of what he intends. He then brings them down into the senses of those watching through the power of his own soul, which affects them. The observers see them as though they existed externally, though nothing of the kind is present. It is related of some practitioners that a person sees gardens, rivers, and palaces when nothing of that kind exists. The philosophers call this deception or prestidigitation. These are the details of its ranks.

This property exists potentially in the magician, as do all human powers, and becomes actual through discipline. The discipline of magic consists entirely in directing oneself toward the spheres, stars, higher worlds, and devils through forms of veneration, worship, submission, and abasement. It is therefore a turning toward and prostration before something other than God. Turning toward something other than God is unbelief; thus magic is unbelief, and unbelief is among its materials and causes, as you have seen. For this reason the jurists differed over whether the magician is killed because of the unbelief preceding his act or because of his corrupting activity and the corruption it produces in the universe. Both are present in him.

Since the first two ranks of magic have an external reality while the third has no reality, scholars differed over whether magic is real or merely imaginative.

Those who say it is real considered the first two ranks.

Those who say it has no reality considered the final, third rank. In reality there is no disagreement between them; the disagreement arose only from confusing these ranks. God knows best.

Know that the existence of magic is beyond doubt among rational people because of the effect we have mentioned, and the Qur'aan speaks of it. God Most High said: {But the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic, and what was sent down to the two angels at Babylon, Haaroot and Maaroot. Yet they taught no one without saying, “We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.” From them they learned that by which they separated a man from his wife, though they could harm no one by it except with God's permission}.

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was bewitched, so that it seemed to him that he did something when he had not done it. His magic was placed in a comb, hair removed in combing, and the dried sheath of a date-palm blossom, then buried in the well of Dhoo Arwaan. God Most High then revealed to him in the two protective sooras: {And from the evil of those who blow on knots}.

'Aa'isha, may God be pleased with her, said: “He would not recite over one of the knots in which he had been bewitched without it coming undone.”

As for the existence of magic among the people of Babylon—the Chaldeans, Nabataeans, and Syrians—it was widespread. The Qur'aan speaks of it and reports transmit it.

At the time of Moses' mission, peace be upon him, magic had thriving markets in Babylon and Egypt. For this reason Moses' miracle was of the same kind as what they claimed and practiced. Remnants of this remain in the temples of Upper Egypt as evidence of it. We have seen with our own eyes people who make an image of the bewitched person through special properties corresponding to what they intend, with the intended state existing in the bewitched person, and similar meanings of Names and attributes used to unite or separate.

They then speak over the image they have made to stand in place of the bewitched person, literally or symbolically. After gathering saliva in the mouth, they blow it out while repeating the articulations of the letters in evil speech, and tie that meaning onto a prepared cord, seeking an omen through tying and binding and taking a covenant from the jinn associated with him, as he blows during the act, inwardly sensing the incantation, structure, and evil names.

A wicked spirit leaves him with the breath, attached to the saliva issuing from his mouth as he blows. Wicked spirits descend from it, and through this the bewitched person experiences what the magician seeks to cause.

We have also seen people who claim magic point at a garment or hide and speak over it secretly, whereupon it is suddenly cut and torn. They point similarly at the bellies of sheep in their pastures, slashing them so that their intestines fall from their bellies onto the ground.

We have heard that in India today there are people who point at a person, whereupon his heart is cut open and he falls dead; when his chest is searched, the heart is not found inside it. They point at a pomegranate, and when it is opened none of its seeds is there.

We have likewise heard that in the lands of the Sudan and the Turks there are people who bewitch clouds so that they rain upon a specified land.

We have also seen, in the work of talismans, wonders involving amicable numbers: one of the numbers is 220 and the other 284.

“Amicable” means that the proper divisors of each number—its half, third, fourth, sixth, fifth, and the like—when added together equal the other number, its companion; for this reason they are called amicable.

The practitioners of talismans transmit that these numbers have an effect in creating affection and union between lovers when two figures are made for them, one with Venus rising while in her domicile or exaltation and looking toward the Moon with affection and acceptance. The ascendant of the second is made the seventh from the first, and one of the numbers is placed on one figure and the other on the other. The larger is assigned to the one whose affection is desired, namely the beloved—I do not know whether “larger” refers to quantity or to the greater number of divisors. This produces such a powerful union between lovers that one scarcely separates from the other. The author of Ghaayat al-Hakeem and other authorities in this field stated this, and experience has confirmed it.

Likewise, there is the lion seal, also called the pebble seal. In its mold one draws a lion raising its tail and biting a pebble divided into two halves. Before it is a snake winding from its feet toward its face, its mouth gaping toward its mouth, and on its back is a crawling scorpion. One waits to draw it until the Sun enters the first or third degree of Leo, provided that the two luminaries are favorable and free of malefic influence. When that time is found, it is stamped in an amount of gold no greater than a mithqaal, then immersed in saffron dissolved in rosewater and kept in a yellow silk cloth. They claim that its bearer thereby gains such power over sultans in their dealings, service, and subjugation that it cannot be described, and that sultans gain through it power and might over those under their authority. The people of this field mention this in Ghaaya and elsewhere, and experience has confirmed it.

Likewise, there is the six-sided magic square associated with the Sun. They say it is placed when the Sun enters its exaltation, free of malefic influence, and the Moon is likewise safe, with a royal ascendant in which the lord of the tenth looks upon the lord of the ascendant with affection and acceptance. It is made when the noble indications found in the nativities of kings are present. It is then wrapped in a yellow silk cloth after being immersed in perfume, and they claim that it produces an effect in accompanying kings, serving them, associating with them, and similar matters. Such things are numerous.

Ghaayat al-Hakeem by Maslama ibn Ahmad al-Majreetee records this craft and contains its complete treatment and all its questions.

It was reported to us [Edition footnote 1] that Imaam Fakhr al-Deen ibn al-Khateeb composed a book on this subject called al-Sirr al-Maktoom. Its people circulate it in the East, but we have not encountered it. The imaam was not, as we suppose, one of the authorities in this field, though perhaps the matter is otherwise. In the Maghrib, a class of people who claim these magical acts are known as ba''aajoon. They are the people mentioned earlier who point at a garment or hide and tear it, and point at the bellies of sheep and slash them open. One of them is now called a ba''aaj because the magic he most often claims is slashing livestock, thereby frightening their owners into giving him a portion of what they possess. They conceal this to the utmost out of fear for themselves from the authorities. I met a group of them and witnessed these acts. They told me that they have a particular orientation and discipline based on unbelieving invocations and associating the spiritual forces of jinn and stars. They study a page written for this purpose called al-Khazeeriyya. Through this discipline and orientation they attain these acts. They claim that their effect concerns everything except free human beings—property, animals, and slaves—and express this by saying: “I affect only what money passes through,” meaning whatever is owned, sold, and purchased among possessions. This is what they claimed; I asked some of them, and he informed me of it.

Their acts are outwardly manifest and existent. We encountered many of them and witnessed them without doubt. This is the nature of magic and talismans and their effects in the world.

The philosophers distinguished between magic and talismans after establishing that both are effects of the human soul. They argued for the existence of an effect of the human soul by noting that it has effects on its own body outside the ordinary course and its bodily causes, such as incidental effects arising from the qualities of spirits: heat caused by joy and happiness through psychic conceptions, and what occurs through imagination. A person walking on the edge of a wall or on an upright rope will certainly fall if the idea of falling becomes strong in his mind. Many people train themselves until this fear disappears, and then they walk on the edge of a wall or an upright rope without fearing a fall. This establishes that it is an effect of the human soul and its conception of falling through imagination. If the soul has this effect on its body without natural bodily causes, it may have a similar effect outside its body, since its relation to bodies in this kind of influence is the same: it is neither located in the body nor impressed upon it. Thus it is established that it affects all other bodies.

Their distinction between magic and talismans is that magic does not require an aid, whereas the practitioner of talismans seeks assistance from the spiritual forces of the stars, the secrets of numbers, the properties of existent things, and celestial configurations that affect the elemental world, as astrologers say.

They say: “Magic is the union of one spirit with another.”

[Edition footnote 1: al-Sirr al-Maktoom fee Mukhaatabat al-Nujoom was attributed to Imaam Fakhr al-Deen Mahmood ibn 'Umar al-Raazee, who died in 536 AH. It is said that it was falsely attributed to him, and its authorship has not been authenticated. Even if it were attributed to him, it is not magic; let one who knows magic consider it. This was said by Taaj al-Subkee in the margin of this book. Shaykh Zayn al-Deen Surayhaa ibn Muhammad al-Maltee, who died in 788 AH, wrote a response entitled Inqidhaadh al-Baazee fee Qisaas al-Raazee. I have seen it stated in a book that it belongs to Aboo al-Hasan 'Alee ibn Ahmad al-Maghribee. God knows best. al-Dhahabee said in al-Meezaan that he had a book entitled Asraar al-Nujoom, which was outright magic. Thus in Kashf al-Dhunoon; Hakeem Maghz al-Deen Khaalis Fooree, seeking eminence, may God preserve him.]

The talisman is the union of a spirit with a body.

According to them, this means binding the higher, celestial natures to the lower natures.

The higher natures are the spiritual forces of the stars, which is why its practitioner generally seeks the aid of astrology.

According to them, the magician does not acquire his magic; rather, he is innately formed with the constitution particular to that kind of influence.

Their distinction between miracle and magic is that a miracle is divine: it produces that effect in the soul, and the person is supported by the Spirit of God in performing it. The magician performs it from himself, through his psychic power and, at times, through the assistance of devils.

The difference between them in intelligibility, reality, and essence is therefore established in itself. We infer the difference through outward signs: a miracle belongs to a person of goodness, serves good aims, arises from souls wholly devoted to good, and is accompanied by a challenge asserting prophethood. Magic, by contrast, belongs to a person of evil and usually appears in evil acts, such as separating spouses and harming enemies, and arises from souls wholly devoted to evil.

This is the distinction between them according to the theosophical sages. Some Sufis and possessors of miraculous gifts may also produce effects in the conditions of the world, but this is not counted as magic; it occurs through divine support, because their path and doctrine derive from prophethood and its consequences. They receive a share of divine support according to their state, faith, and adherence to the Word of God. If one of them gains power to perform evil acts, he does not perform them, because he is bound in what he does and leaves undone by the divine command. Whatever he is not permitted to do, he does not do in any way; if one of them does it, he has departed from the path of truth and may be stripped of his spiritual state.

Since a miracle is supported by the Spirit of God and divine powers, nothing of magic can oppose it. Consider the magicians of Pharaoh with Moses, and the miracle of the staff: it swallowed what they had fabricated, and their magic vanished and disappeared as though it had never existed. Likewise, when the two protective sooras were revealed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him—{And from the evil of those who blow on knots}—'Aa'isha, may God be pleased with her, said: “He would not recite them over one of the knots in which he had been bewitched without it coming undone.” Magic cannot persist with the Name and remembrance of God.

Historians have transmitted that Zurqash Kaawiyaan, the banner of Kisraa, contained a numerical magic square woven in gold according to celestial configurations observed for that square. The banner was found on the ground on the day Rustam was killed at al-Qaadisiyya, after the Persians had been defeated and scattered. This was a talisman and magic square specifically intended for victory in wars; a banner containing it or accompanied by it was never defeated. This one, however, encountered the divine support of the Companions of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, through their faith and adherence to the Word of God. Every magical knot was undone with it, and what they had practiced did not endure and was nullified.

The Law did not distinguish between magic and talismans; it made them one prohibited category. The Lawgiver permitted only those acts that concern our religion, in which lies the welfare of our afterlife, or our livelihood, in which lies the welfare of our worldly life. Whatever concerns neither, if it contains harm or a kind of harm—like magic, whose harm is realized through its effects—has talismans attached to it because their effects are the same. The same applies to astrology when it contains the harm of believing in efficacy, which corrupts the creed of faith by referring matters to other than God Most High.

Such an act is then prohibited in proportion to its harm. If it is of no importance to us and contains no harm, the least that can be said is that abandoning it is an act of devotion to God, for part of the excellence of a person's Islam is leaving what does not concern him. Thus the Law made magic, talismans, and prestidigitation one category because of the harm they contain and specifically prohibited and forbade it.

As for their distinction between miracle and magic, the theologians said that it returns to the challenge: it is the claim that the miracle occurs in accordance with what the claimant asserts. They said that the magician is prevented from making such a challenge. A miracle cannot occur in accordance with a liar's claim, because the miracle's indication of truth is rational: truthfulness is intrinsic to it. If it occurred with a lie, the truthful would become a liar, which is impossible. Thus a miracle cannot occur with a liar under any circumstances.

The sages, however, distinguish them as we have stated: they are the difference between good and evil at the two extremes. Good does not issue from the magician, nor does he use it for good purposes; evil does not issue from the possessor of a miracle, nor does he use it for evil purposes. They are thus like opposite ends in their original constitution. God guides whom He wills; He is the Powerful, the Mighty; there is no lord but Him.

Among these psychic effects is the evil eye. It is an effect of the soul of the one who casts it when he admires, through his gaze, some person or condition, carries his admiration to excess, and then, as a result, desires to deprive the thing of what characterizes it, thereby affecting it with corruption. This is an innate disposition—namely, the evil eye.

The distinction between it and other effects, even those that are not acquired, is that their issuance depends on the choice of their agent, while the innate aspect concerns the power of its issuance, not the issuance itself. For this reason they say that one who kills through magic or a miraculous gift kills, whereas one who kills through the evil eye does not kill. This is because he neither wills nor intends it nor refrains from it; its issuance from him is compelled. God knows best what is hidden and is aware of what hearts conceal. This concludes Ibn Khaldoon's words, from whose work I have transmitted them here and throughout this book. God Most High grants success in truth and correctness.

The Science of Seemiyaa'

Know that this name may be applied to what is not real magic, which is the common usage.

Its essence is producing imaginary forms in the air that have no sensory existence. It may also be applied to producing those forms in their images within the senses. In that case, some forms appear in the substance of the air and quickly dissolve because the substance of the air changes quickly. There is no possibility of preserving the form it receives for a long time because of its moistness; it is therefore quick to receive and quick to lose.

The manner of producing these forms and their causes is hidden, known only to its practitioners. Describing and verifying it is not our purpose here; the purpose here is to disclose and remove confusion concerning examples of it.

In summary, the magician combines substances possessing properties, oils, impediments, or special words that produce particular imaginings, such as making the senses perceive food, drink, and similar things in a different manner. It has no reality.

Many stories concerning this are related of Ibn Seenaa and al-Suhrawardee al-Maqtool. This is the end of what is in Kashf al-Madhnoon.

Ibn Khaldoon discussed this science at length over several folios, but we are not concerned with transmitting it here.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “Among the stories related by al-Awzaa'ee is that of a Jew who encountered him during a journey. The Jew took a frog and bewitched it by the method of the Science of Seemiyaa' until it became a pig, then sold it to a group of Christians. When they reached their homes, it became a frog again. They pursued the Jew, who was with al-Awzaa'ee. When they approached him, they saw that his head had fallen off. They panicked and fled, while the head remained saying to al-Awzaa'ee: 'Aboo 'Amr, have they gone?' When they had moved far away, the head returned to the body.” This is what Ibn al-Subkee related in his treatise Mu'eed al-Ni'am wa-Mubeed al-Niqam.

The benefit and purpose of this science are very clear. The word Seemiyaa' is a Hebraized Arabic form, originally seem yaah, meaning “the Name of God.” As for al-Hallaaj's seventeen statements, they are symbolic. Strange matters in this science are also transmitted from Ibn Seenaa and from Shaykh Shihaab al-Deen al-Suhrawardee al-Maqtool. End.

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyya, may God have mercy on him, established in his works that al-Hallaaj was one of the sorcerers and prestidigitators, not one of God's saints as a group of Sufis claimed. God knows best, and His knowledge is most complete.

The Science of Moles and Birthmarks

This is how it appears in Kashf al-Dhunoon, which adds nothing further. Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “It is a science that investigates the conditions of the aforementioned marks according to their indication of the inner conditions and character traits present in a human being by nature. Some sages composed treatises on it, but they are exceedingly rare.” End.

The Science of Prestidigitation

This was discussed earlier in the supplement to the Science of Magic.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “The Science of Prestidigitation, Imaginary Effects, and Deceiving the Eyes consists in making people see a thing contrary to its reality through the speed of its practitioners' actions.”

“Prestidigitation”—also called sha'wadha—is an Arabicized form of the word shabaada, the name of a man to whom this science is attributed.

It is a science based on sleight of hand: making people see a repeated thing as one thing and one thing as repeated through rapid movement; making inanimate objects appear alive; hiding a perceptible object from people's eyes without taking it away by hand; and other states that people recognize through their immediate occurrence rather than their underlying causes. It is not magic at all, but because it resembles magic to the eye, we have made it one of its branches. End.

The Science of Talismans

This was discussed earlier in the explanation of the Science of Magic. The meaning of talisman is “a knot that cannot be untied.” It is also said to be the inversion of its name, meaning “that which subjugates,” because it is among the substances of domination and mastery.

It is a science that investigates how to combine active celestial powers with receptive terrestrial powers at times suitable for the intended act and effect, together with appropriate incenses that strengthen and attract the spiritual force of the talisman, so that strange effects appear from these things in the world of generation and corruption. It is easier to approach than the Science of Magic because its principles and causes are known.

Its benefit is evident, but the path to acquiring it is extremely arduous. al-Majreetee laid out the rules of this art in Ghaayat al-Hakeem and excelled in it, but he chose obscurity and precision because of his extreme reluctance and complete stinginess in teaching it.

Al-Sakkaakee has a distinguished book on it.

Ibn Wahshiyya transmitted from the Nabataeans a book called Tabtaanaa on this science.

The Science of Omens and Augury

This is the opposite of bibliomancy, for bibliomancy is a cause for proceeding, whereas this is a cause for holding back. It is pessimism concerning something encountered by sight or hearing from which the soul recoils. What repels by natural disposition, such as the screech of iron or the braying of a donkey, is not included. The word tiyara derives from birds, which were the original basis of this practice, and other things were subsequently attached to it.

When the Arabs intended to travel, they released a bird. If it flew to the right, they proceeded toward their destination; if it flew to the left, they turned back from the journey. They called the first a saanih and the second a baarih. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited omens and commanded bibliomancy.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says that Haafidh Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, said in his Miftaah Daar al-Sa'aada:

“An omen harms only one who is apprehensive of it and fears it. Whoever pays it no attention and does not fear it is not harmed at all, especially if, upon seeing or hearing the thing from which he takes an omen, he says: 'O God, there is no omen but Your omen, no good but Your good, and no god but You. O God, none brings good deeds but You, none removes evil deeds but You, and there is no power or strength except through You.'”

Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam said: “'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azeez left Medina while the Moon was in al-Dabaraan. I disliked leaving with it, so I said: 'How beautiful the Moon's position is tonight!' He looked at me and said: 'It is as though you intended to tell me that the Moon is in al-Dabaraan. We do not leave with a sun or a moon; we leave with God, the One, the Overpowering.'”

Miftaah Daar al-Sa'aada also says: “As for one who concerns himself with omens, they reach him more swiftly than a torrent reaches its descent. The gates of obsessive whispering are opened to him concerning what he hears and sees, and Satan opens for him near and remote correspondences that corrupt his religion and make his livelihood objectionable.” This is what he mentioned.

Know that some people have had the door of obsessive whispering opened to them and have considered remote matters that make Satan laugh at them and children mock them. For example, some take an omen from the quince when they hear or see it, saying: “It is a journey.”

Some take an omen from jasmine, saying: “It is despair and misfortune.”

Some take an omen from the iris, saying: “It is evil that will last a year.”

It is related that Ja'far al-Barmakee chose a time to move into the house he had built. They selected an hour of a particular night for him. He went out at that time, when the roads were empty, and heard a singer reciting:

“He governs by the stars, yet does not know—

the Lord of the star does what He wills.”

He took this as an omen, summoned the man, and said: “What did you intend by this?” He replied: “I intended no particular meaning; it simply occurred to me and came to my tongue.” Ja'far gave him a dinar and sent him on his way, but his happiness was spoiled and his life troubled. Shortly afterward, al-Rasheed inflicted upon him what is well known. This is the end of what is in Madeenat al-'Uloom.

The Science of Soothsaying

It is the knowledge of inferring future events from certain past events through a hidden correspondence or similarity between them, or through mixture or connection, provided that both are effects of one matter or that the present condition is the cause of the future one. The condition that the connection be hidden means that it is perceived only by exceptional individuals, either through experience or through a state placed in their souls at creation, such that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described them as those who receive inspired insight and are correct in their conjecture and physiognomic perception.

It is related that when Alexander intended to fight the Persian king, the king said: “There is no need for you to confront their armies. Let us fight together: either you will kill me or I will kill you.” Alexander rejoiced at these words, because the king had first mentioned killing himself, and so it happened.

It is also related that when Alexander entered the Maghrib, he passed by a woman weaving a cloth in the city of Tunis. She said to him: “O king, you have been given a kingdom of length and breadth.” Then the first king passed by her, and she said: “Alexander will cut your kingdom.” The king became angry, and she said: “Do not be angry. Souls may sometimes perceive events before they occur through signs that cause the soul to judge them true. When Alexander passed by me, I was weaving the length and breadth of the cloth. When you passed by, I had finished and intended to cut it.” It occurred as she said.

It is related that in the time of Haaroon al-Rasheed there was a blind man skilled in soothsaying. He inferred the matter inquired about from words spoken by those present immediately after the question. One day some objects were stolen from Haaroon's treasury. The man was summoned, and Haaroon ordered that no one speak at all after the question. They did as Haaroon commanded. The blind man listened but heard nothing. He ran his hand over the carpet and found a date stone. He said: “The stolen object is a pearl, an emerald, and a ruby.” al-Rasheed asked: “Where is it?” He said: “In a well.” They found it as the blind man had described, and al-Rasheed was perplexed by him.

He asked him how he had known.

He replied: “I found a date stone. A palm's first growth is white like a pearl; then it becomes an unripe date, green like an emerald; then it becomes a ripe date, red like a ruby. When you asked about the location of the stolen object, I heard the sound of a bucket and knew that it was in a well.” al-Rasheed admired his physiognomic insight and gave him a great deal of money.

It is related that Aboo Ma'shar and his companion went to a soothsayer and asked him about something. He said: “You have asked about a prisoner.” They said: “He will be released.” He said: “Yes, he will be released.” They asked how he knew. He replied: “When you asked me, my eyes fell upon a water-skin, so I knew that the question concerned a prisoner. When you asked me about his release, I looked and saw that he had emptied his water-skin.”

It is related that al-Mahdee saw a dream and forgot it. He summoned a soothsayer and asked him about the dream. The man said: “Commander of the Believers, the practitioner of soothsaying looks at movement.” al-Mahdee became angry that he claimed to be a soothsayer while knowing nothing. He placed his hand on his head, wiped his face, and struck his thigh in the intensity of his anger. The soothsayer said: “Commander of the Believers, I shall tell you your dream.

“You climbed a mountain, then descended to smooth ground containing two salty springs, and then met a man from Quraysh.” al-Mahdee asked how he knew. He replied: “You wiped the head, which is the mountain; wiped the forehead, which is smooth ground containing two salty springs; and struck the thigh, which is your tribe.” al-Mahdee said: “You have spoken the truth,” and ordered that he be given a generous sum. Such stories are numerous and known to anyone who follows accounts of gatherings. The author of Madeenat al-'Uloom mentioned this.

The Science of Incantatory Compulsion

The word 'azaa'im derives from 'azm, meaning determination, firm resolution, commitment to a matter, intention toward it, and imposing it upon another. One says: “I have imposed it upon you,” meaning “I have made it obligatory and binding upon you.”

In technical usage, it means imposing, intensifying, and emphasizing a command upon jinn and devils who appear around the person invoking it and exposing themselves to him. Whenever he says, “I impose upon you,” he has made obedience, submission, subjugation, and abasement to himself obligatory upon them. This is rationally and legally possible. [Edition footnote 1] Whoever denies it is not to be heeded, because that leads to denying God's power—glorified is He. Subjugation and abasement belong to Him, and their submission to human beings is among His wondrous acts.

Aasif ibn Barkhiyaa was asked: “Do jinn and devils obey human beings after Solomon, peace be upon him?” He said: “They obey them as long as the world endures. This occurs through His Beautiful Names, His greatest incantations, His mighty oaths, and drawing near to Him through commendable conduct.”

In its foundation and rule, it is divided into two categories: prohibited and permitted.

The first is prohibited magic.

The permitted is its opposite and contrary. Nothing proceeds from it except through complete scrupulousness, comprehensive chastity, a pure retreat, seclusion from creation, and devotion to God Most High.

You know that subjugation belongs to God Most High, but the investigators differed concerning how it is connected to them from Him.

Some said it occurs in a manner to which no one has access besides Him—glorified is He.

Some said it occurs through the incantation, like a supplication and its answer.

Some said it occurs through the incantation and commendable conduct.

Some said it occurs through obedient, prepared spies.

Some said it occurs through the vigilant and the travelers.

Some said it occurs through the dwellers. This is what is relied upon from the words of the investigators.

Fakhr al-A'imma said: “As for what I hold, when the conditions are gathered and the incantations are correctly directed, God Most High turns them into a great fire that burns them and constricts the reaches of the world around them, leaving them no refuge or space except to appear and obey what he commands. More than this: when the person is guided by commendable conduct and noble character, He sends against them powerful, harsh, and stern angels to restrain them and drive them to his obedience and service.”

The theologians and other investigators affirmed these principles. They said:

“What prevents some of the Names of God Most High or other words in books, incantations, and talismans from being such that, when a person memorizes them and speaks them, God Most High subjugates some jinn, obliges them to obey and willingly comply with what he requests of matters known and witnessed by the jinn, so that they inform the human being? This explains the statement of those who say that among them are prepared spies.” They said: “Their obedience to human beings is neither rejected by reason nor by transmitted evidence.” [Translator footnote 1]

[Translator footnote 1: This is clearly subject to question, because the Lawgiver did not transmit incantations, but only permitted some healing recitations, and incantations are not among them. The author, may his exalted shadow endure, explained this in a response to a question from some people of Basra, in his book Daleel al-Taalib ilaa Arjah al-Maraatib. Consult it. The Science of Bibliomantic Omen-Taking

It is a science through which some future events are learned by the coincidental occurrence of something consisting of speech heard from another person, or by opening the mushaf or the books of prophets and shaykhs, such as the Deevaan of Haafidh, the Mathnawee, and similar works.

The subject of this science is evident from its definition.

Its benefit is like that of geomancy.

The Deevaan of Haafidh became so famous for bibliomantic omens that works were composed about it. It is a well-known book circulated among the Persians, who take omens from it. Often a verse from it corresponds to the state of the person seeking the omen, and for this reason it is called the Tongue of the Unseen. Muhammad ibn Shaykh Muhammad al-Harawee composed a brief treatise confirming this claim, reporting accounts of omens taken from it and cases in which the result corresponded to the state of the person seeking the omen.

He went to excess in praising the aforementioned shaykh. Husayn al-Kafawee, who died after 980 AH, composed a Turkish treatise on omens from the Deevaan of Haafidh, filled with strange stories.

Mustafaa ibn Sha'baan, who used the pen name Sarooree and died in 969 AH, wrote a Turkish commentary on it.

As for taking omens from the Noble Qur'aan, some permitted it because of reports from the Companions, and because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, liked bibliomantic omens and prohibited bird omens.

Others prohibited it. The eminent imaam Aboo Bakr ibn al-'Arabee explicitly declared taking such an omen prohibited in his book al-Ahkaam, under Soorat al-Maa'ida.

This is the correct position. Imaam al-Qaraafee also transmitted it from Imaam al-Turtooshee.

Al-Dameeree said: “The implication of our school is that it is disliked, but Ibn Batta al-Hanbalee permitted it.”

Madeenat al-'Uloom says:

“The soundest position, whose truth has been attested by experience and whose permissibility is supported by the Law, is taking omens from the Great Qur'aan. This has been transmitted from the Companions and the righteous early generations. Opening the mushaf for an omen is widespread and well known among people, but it is better to consider meanings rather than words and letters.” End.

I say: The relied-upon position is not to take omens from the Book of God. Nothing has been transmitted from the early generations through a reliable route in this matter, and none of the scholars of hadith held it. If opening the Revelation for an omen is prohibited, what of other books of prophets, saints, and shaykhs?

A form of associationism has entered the beliefs of Muslims through this practice; may God protect us from it. Yes, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his Household, liked good omens and did not take bird omens.

When he migrated to Medina and drew near to it, he heard a caller calling: “O Saalim!” He said to his Companions: “We are safe.”

When he entered Medina, he heard another person say: “O Ghaanim!” He said: “We have gained.”

When he alighted, fresh dates were brought to him, and he said: “The town has welcomed us.” The historians transmitted this; God knows the reliability of its chain. There are many such examples. Restricting oneself to what the Sunna transmits is safer and more protective of religion.

As for bird omens and augury, they are the opposite of bibliomancy: bibliomancy calls for proceeding, while omens call for holding back. The basis of augury is that a person becomes pessimistic about something whose arrival through hearing or sight affects the soul, not by nature. Natural aversion, such as aversion to the screech of glass or iron, is not of this kind.

The word tatayyur derives from birds, because the Arabs originally practiced augury through birds, such as the voice of a crow; other things were attached to it in expression. Examples of bird omens among the Arabs are numerous.

It may also occur among other peoples, making their lives troubled and opening the gates of obsessive whispering as they consider remote correspondences of word and meaning, such as travel and exile from the word for quince, despair and misfortune from jasmine, an evil year from the iris, and encountering an invalid at the time of departure, along with similar examples.

Ibn al-Qayyim said in Miftaah al-Sa'aada: “Know that the harm and effect of bird omens belong to the person who fears them and is changed by them. As for one who pays them no attention, they have no effect at all, especially if, upon seeing or hearing them, he says: 'O God, there is no omen but Your omen, no good but Your good, and no god but You.'” End.

I say: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited bird omens and said: “There is no bird omen, no haama, and no Safar.” The matter is stated explicitly in the hadith books, especially Fath al-Baaree, the commentary on Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, Nayl al-Awtaar, the commentary on Muntaqaa al-Akhbaar, and elsewhere.

The Science of Physiognomy

The author of Miftaah al-Sa'aada counted it among the branches of natural science and said:

“It is a science through which one learns the character of people from their outward conditions, including colors, forms, and limbs; in short, it is inferring the inward character from the outward constitution.”

Its subject and benefit are evident.

Among the books composed on it is the imaam al-Raazee's abridgement of Aristotle's book, with important additions. Iqleemoon has a book on physiognomy specific to women, and Muhammad ibn al-Soofee's Book of Statecraft is a useful abridgement in this science. This science is honored by God Most High's saying: {Indeed, in that are signs for those who read the signs}; His saying, glorified is He: {You will recognize them by their mark}; and the Prophet's saying, peace and blessings be upon him: “Beware the physiognomic perception of the believer, for he sees by the light of God”; and his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: “Among those before you, among the nations, were inspired speakers. If there were one among my community, it would be 'Umar.”

I say: The inspired speaker who is correct in his conjecture and physiognomic perception is as though he were newly addressed. This science benefits kings and commoners in choosing a spouse, friend, slaves, and other matters. A person must possess this science because he is social by nature and needs to know what is harmful and what is beneficial. Madeenat al-'Uloom mentioned it.

The Science of Phalqateeraat

It consists of long lines on which letters and shapes—namely rings and circles—are knotted. They claim that these have special effects, and some of the lines are readable.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “The method of this science has remained hidden from me, in both its essence and modality, and we have not seen a work explaining its nature.” End.

The author of the Miftaah says in his discussions: “We have seen many of them on scattered papers, but we have not seen a separate work on them, nor have we learned how they are made or whether they produce an effect. Their condition therefore remains unknown to us from beginning to end.” End.

The Science of Conjunctions

The author of Miftaah al-Sa'aada says: “Know that a conjunction is the meeting of two or more of the seven wandering stars at one degree of one zodiacal sign. This science investigates the judgments operating in this world because all seven, or some of them, conjoin at one degree of a particular sign.” End.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “They claim that the conjunctions of all or some of the stars produce effects in the world of generation and corruption, such as the occurrence of a great flood, like the flood of Noah, peace be upon him; the change of a religion, such as the sending of prophets; or the change of a state, such as the victories of Alexander, Genghis Khan, Timur, and similar figures.

“They claim that some occur once every twenty years, some once every two hundred and forty years, some once every seven hundred and sixty years, and some once every three thousand and forty-eight years.

“Some occur once every seven thousand years. God knows best the reality of the matter. This science investigates the judgments operating in this world because of these conjunctions.

“Naseer al-Deen al-Toosee composed a work on this subject, as did the sage Jaamaasp.” End.

I say: The book Hujaj al-Karaama fee Aathaar al-Qiyaama contains sufficient material for recording the events of past conjunctions. Consult it and your heart will be relieved.

The Science of Cleromancy

It is a science [Edition footnote 1] through which one infers future conditions by writing letters in a particular shape, then infers the occurrence of the desired matter from the shape that results. It resembles geomancy, and its conditions are considered in the same way, but its indications are weaker than those of geomancy. God knows best.

[Edition footnote 1: Cleromancy has been established as a recognized procedure in Islamic law, as the author—may his exalted shadow endure—explicitly stated in his book on judicial decisions. Let this be known. Sayyid Noor al-Hasan Khaan, may God preserve and perpetuate him.]

The Science of Tracking Human Resemblance

It has two divisions:

Tracking footprints, also called 'iyaafa, which was discussed earlier.

Tracking human resemblance, which is intended here: a science that investigates how to infer from the bodily forms of two people that they share a relationship and birth, and other conditions and character traits.

This form of inference is restricted to Banoo Mudlij, Banoo La'b, and other Arabs because of a natural affinity found in them that cannot be learned.

The wisdom of restricting it to them returns, as some sages said, to preserving prophetic lineage.

It was restricted to the Arabs so that it might cause their women to refrain from what produces corrupt perception and mixed lineage through the corruption of seed and cultivation. This science is acquired through intuition and conjecture, not through inference and certainty. God Most High knows best.

It is related that Imaam al-Shaafi'ee and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan saw a man. Muhammad said: “He is a carpenter.”

Al-Shaafi'ee said: “He is a blacksmith.” They asked the man about his craft, and he replied: “I was a blacksmith, and now I am a carpenter.”

It is called the tracking of human resemblance because its practitioner follows the skin, bodies, and feet of human beings.

This science cannot be acquired through study and instruction, which is why no book was composed on it.

They mention that Iqleemoon, the physiognomist, claimed in his time that he could infer character from the composition of a human being. The students of Hippocrates wished to test him. They made an image of Hippocrates and brought it to him. The Greeks made images so that they resembled the person represented in every respect, great and small, because they venerated and worshiped images and therefore perfected them. All nations followed them in this, and the deficiency of later imitators in representation is obvious. When they came to Iqleemoon, he studied the image, examined it carefully, and said: “This is a man who loves fornication.” He did not know whom it represented. They said: “You are mistaken; this is an image of Hippocrates.” He replied: “My craft must be correct; ask him.” When they returned to Hippocrates and told him what had happened, he said: “Iqleemoon is right. I love fornication, but I control myself.” Thus in the History of the Sages.

Madeenat al-'Uloom says: “The basis of this science is what is established in medical investigations concerning the affinity and resemblance between a child and its parents. This affinity may lie in outward matters perceptible to everyone, or in hidden matters perceived only by those possessing perfection.

“For this reason people differ in this science in perfection and deficiency, to the point that some person finds nothing obscure at all because of the perfection of his two faculties: the faculty of sight and the faculty of retention, both of which are necessary for acquiring this science. It is found among Arab tribes and is rare among others, because it is acquired only through long experience and practice. For this reason no work has been composed on the science; it is inherited. Because the Arabs cared about it, it became particular to them and was inherited from generation to generation. It is therefore not found among others.” End.

I say: The Lawgiver also recognized tracking human resemblance in some rulings, as appears in the sound report of Mujazziz al-Aslamee. He entered and saw Usaama ibn Zayd and Zayd, both covered with a cloak over their heads while their feet were exposed. Mujazziz al-Aslamee looked at them and said: “These feet belong to one another.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was pleased by this. Haafidh Ibn Hajar, may God Most High have mercy on him, said: “The reason this hadith is included in the Book of Inheritance is to refute those who claim that the tracker's judgment is not considered. If his statement is considered and acted upon, inheritance must follow between the person attached to the lineage and the person to whom he is attached.” End. The eminent judge Muhammad ibn 'Alee al-Shawkaanee discussed this at length in his works. Consult them.

The Science of Decomposition and Expansion

It is a science involving the arrangement of disjointed letters: a person cuts apart the letters of one of the Names of God Most High, mixes them with the letters sought, and places them in a line. He then follows a method known to its practitioners, changing the order of the letters in the first line, then in the second, and so on until the exact first line is formed. From it he extracts names of angels and invocations with which he occupies himself until he achieves his aim. This is what the author of Miftaah al-Sa'aada says; Madeenat al-'Uloom contains something similar.

The Science of Soothsayer Divination

It concerns the correspondence between human spirits and the disembodied spirits of jinn and devils, and seeking through them information about particular events occurring in the world of generation and corruption, especially future events. It is most common among the Arabs.

Two soothsayers became famous among them, one named Shaqq and the other Sateeh; their stories are well known in the biographical accounts.

It is said that their existence among the Arabs was one of the reasons for the miracles of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, because he would report what they had said and encourage people to follow him. They are said to have reported the coming of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, before his blessed birth and that he would be the prophet of the final age and the Seal of the Prophets.

There are strange stories in this subject that should not be included in this abridgement. Whoever wishes to learn them should consult books of biography and history, especially al-Maawardee's A'laam al-Nubuwwa. After the mission of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, however, they were deprived of access to unseen matters and veiled from them by the predominance of the Prophet's light, peace and blessings be upon him. Some reports even state that there is no soothsaying after prophethood. It is therefore not permissible today to believe soothsayers or listen to them; this is among the signs of unbelief, and the believer in them is an unbeliever, according to his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: “Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was sent down to Muhammad.”

Yet al-Raazee's al-Sirr al-Maktoom appears to imply that it is legally permissible, since the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, allowed the evil eye and said: “The evil eye is real.”

Al-Raazee said that soothsaying has two divisions:

One division is a special property of certain souls and is not acquired.

The other is achieved through incantations, invoking the stars, and occupying oneself with them. Some of its methods are mentioned in that book. Since following this path is prohibited in our Law, one must avoid acquiring and learning it. The first division falls under the Science of Soothsaying, which was noted in its proper place, so do not overlook it.

It is related that Sultan Yameen al-Dawla Mahmood ibn Sabuktigeen besieged a fortress, but opening it proved difficult. A man came out of the fortress and said: “Nothing prevents you from opening it except the people of imagination and those who live in it. Nothing prevents them except confusing them in a way that stops them from directing their imagination: various disturbing drums and the overwhelming, disquieting presence of the armies at sunrise.” They did as he said, and the fortress opened to them. Thus in Madeenat al-'Uloom.

The Science of Maraahiyaat

This is how it appears in Kashf al-Dhunoon.

The Science of Knowing Spiritual Properties

This is derived from numerical and alphabetic sciences and from numerical and alphabetic decompositions. It is a science that investigates how to combine numbers and letters in proportion and equilibrium, so that, through this adjustment, governing spirits become attached to receptacles and affect them as intended and desired. It concerns the arrangement of numbers and letters and their modes. Its subject is numbers and letters, and its aim is attaining religious, worldly, or otherworldly objectives.

Its purpose and benefit are evident. The books of 'Abd al-Rahmaan al-Antaakee are useful in this field, as are the books of Shaykh Ahmad al-Boonee and other noble shaykhs. Madeenat al-'Uloom mentioned it.

The Science of Magic Squares

This is how it appears in Kashf al-Dhunoon, which adds nothing, although under the Science of the Numbers of Magic Squares it promised to explain it under the Science of Magic Squares. We have already explained it there; consult that discussion. In this age I wrote a response to a question sent to me by people of Basra. Its conclusion is that using magic squares is prohibited, that it is a type of magic, and that it is a form of associationism. God knows best.
